Not completely bewitched by The Witches of East End

I am a big fan of the light and easy YA series Blue Bloods, so I was keen to try Melissa de la Cruz’s new paranormal series for adults, The Beauchamp Family.

With Blue Blood’s Mimi Force making a cameo appearance (which dips in to the next book in that series), book one The Witches of East End and its resident family of witches have similar roots in Melissa de la Cruz’s reworking of various Earthly mythologies that we know and love (or hate).

I was left disappointed by the too-late explanation of the heritage of these witches and a rushed ending. Reading this not long after watching the latest Thor movie, which references the same mythology (albeit used very differently), I would like to have been introduced to this aspect of the heritage of the Beauchamp witches a lot earlier and I think it would have added to the book which felt a flat.

However, I enjoyed the story enough to consider reading the next in this series when it comes out, and am looking forward to returning to Blue Bloods for Lost in Time, available late September 2011.

The LA Times review pretty much nails this book -- it's strengths and imperfections.

More information on The Witches of East End, Lost in Time and Melissa de la Cruz's other books can be found here on her official website.
